Does anyone else think it’s pretty funny that a holiday of “rest” is called Labor Day? Honestly, our birthdays should be called Labor Day. (Sorry, Mom.) Guess it’s all about perspective.

So here’s a Labor Day Fun Fact: It started in our northerly neighbor Canada. It first became a U.S. holiday in 1882, as the average American worked 12-hour days, seven days a week to eke out a basic living. Even children under 10 were put to work. So about 140 years later, we’re knocking back beer and still damn thrilled to have this Monday off.

Speaking of beer, the Bedford Blues Fest is featuring Samantha Fish and Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. And that massive patch of land at tourist trap (guilty!) SouthFork Ranch is having their musical festival INDOORS (bless them).  There’s a Meditation Center in Aubrey that is holding a silent retreat. Huh. Having never done one of these of course I’m intrigued. Report back if you sign up. Want a day trip out of the metroplex? Crandall, Texas, southeast of Seagoville, offers the Cotton Fest. Hot-dog eating contest, here we come! NEW NEWS: The Dallas Zoo is having Brew at the Zoo this Friday: $55 ticket gets you sample pours, music and animal encounters! 21+ only.

Hope you get the day off, FunCity Fam. Thanks for checking out our list. Go do something fun this weekend.
