So I’m going to give you the bad news first.

Bonus Fun Stuff:Corner Bakery Southlake Town Square Offers Tasteful Comfort Food

The first time that I walked up to the Old West Cafe in Bedford, I almost left. The place was jammed with what felt like eleventy billion people. Not just a little bit crowded, ok? Granted, they are in a strip mall with a complicated parking lot, but people sat on curbs and spilled out in front of other stores. Half of me thought, “This is a great sign!” and the other half thought, “Oh hell no.”

Tip from an introvert, and strike two: It’s loud in there, and if you’re like me, you know how annoying this is. I’ve been there since with small and large groups, and you better just go in and eat. You can talk outside or go somewhere else to talk.

As it turns out, the food makes up for the crowds and the noise. This is the kind of place that you want to take your co-worker, your mother, your best friend and your preacher. (I mean, it doesn’t have to be all at the same time. Could be awkward. But anyway.) The menu is so vast that you will want to take a good solid 10 minutes and actually read it. Seriously, they even crack jokes in the middle of the menu. Order some coffee first and take your time.

The Pancake

Normally, when you go out for pancakes you get a stack but I don’t think that a normal human could eat a stack of pancakes from OWC. A pancake from these folks is bigger than Big Foot’s head. [Ed. Note: This writer will neither confirm nor deny that she’s seen Big Foot. Assume hyperbole. Carry on.]

They have the standard pancake flavors that you would expect such as Buttermilk, Blueberry, Multigrain, etc. However, there are two flavors that need to be highlighted here. The Blueberry-Lemon pancake tastes like bright lemon and rich blueberry, not one or the other. Then there is the Crumbled Sausage Cakes that have crumbled breakfast sausage inside the pancake. Weird, right? No, delicious right-into-your-face delicious.

Ok, so I’m fangirling a little bit here, but wow. Check out the menu here.

The Cattle Baron

My favorite dish is an English muffin with grilled spinach, tomato, bacon and eggs on top. As if this isn’t enough food, it also comes with two sides. My favorite sides are the grits and the oatmeal but that is a lot of carbs. Sometimes, I go for it but other times, I will get the seasonal fruit and grits. If grits are an option, I get grits. Grits are my thing.

Not in the mood for breakfast food? I can tell you from experience that they have a Chicken Fried Steak that will not disappoint. It’s not the best or most “authentic” CFS I’ve ever had, but solid.
